From all outward appearances, Pippa Lee leads a charmed existence. She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staid Connecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test. In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth. Embarking on a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, accompanied by a new, strange and soulful acquaintance, Pippa must now confront both her volatile past and the hidden resentment of her seemingly perfect life in order to find her true sense of self. “Blake Lively, who plays Pippa as a young adult freefalling precariously, is especially good.”
Louise Keller | Urban Cinefile
“The two actresses create a seamless congruence in the character, ably shepherding her through these various uncertain periods. They look alike; but more importantly, they project the vulnerability borne out of a life spent going at it alone, with Pippa having been objectified and otherwise used by the people who are most important to her. Ms. Lively’s subdued performance, rife with the cautious passivity of a woman uncomfortable in her skin, gives way to Ms. Wright Penn’s, which hits similar notes but adds to them the depth of an extra 25 years of experience and a steadily mounting frustration with the status quo. Collectively, they give Ms. Miller’s creation a palpable human face, making Pippa Lee and her private lives resonate with a fullness comparable to the great fictional characters.”
Robert Levin | Critic’s Notebook
“Blake Lively, playing Pippa in her younger days also delivers a very confident and assured portrayal, and looks to have quite the career ahead of her in film once her television series Gossip Girl comes to an end.”
Darren Amner | Eye for Film
“Equally good is Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, who plays Pippa’s younger self in the flashbacks that form a large portion of the film.”
Future Movies
It might be difficult for people to get their heads around, possibly even infuriating. But in this sweaty mess of a menopausal anxiety drama (starring some normally fine actors), it’s Blake Lively who delivers the most gravitas. Lively is, of course, the swanning Serena of Gossip Girl; her role on that show has a limited range. Here, as the teenage version of an ill-defined blond train wreck, Lively is a fierce wonder: a self-described “fuckup” prancing through NYC’s Warholian art world, confidently flirting with lesbians (including a manic Julianne Moore) and unhappily resigning herself to a boring life.”
