Filmmaker Oliver Stone (Platoon) takes on drug cartels in Savages.

Based on the novel by Don Winslow, the crime film follows two budding pot entrepreneurs, Ben (Aaron Johnson, Albert Nobbs) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch, John Carter) and their shared girlfriend Ophelia (Blake Lively, Green Lantern). Ben’s all peace and love, Chon’s a former Navy SEAL and Ophelia’s happy with a credit card and a mall.

All’s good in marijuana-growing paradise until the Mexican Baja Cartel, headed by Salma Hayek (Frida), decides it wants in on Ben and Chon’s business. When Ben and Chon turn down the Cartel and Hayek responds by sending henchman Benicio Del Toro to kidnap Ophelia, the peaceful pot entrepreneurs must delve into violence to make everything right.

Savages Blu-ray boxShea Whigham (Take Shelter), Emile Hirsch (Killer Joe) and John Travolta (From Paris With Love) also star in the movie.

Rated R, Savages grossed $47 million in theaters, a little more than its estimated budget of $45 million. It’s not a huge box-office count for acclaimed director Stone, who scored $70 million and more with World Trade Center, Any Given Sunday, JFK and others.

But both critics and moviegoers had mixed views of the film, complaining about the ending, the characters and more.

On DVD and Blu-ray, Savages is delivered with the version that ran in theaters as well as an unrated version that’s 11 minutes longer.

The Blu-ray, a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, also includes a downloadable digital copy and instant streaming of the theatrical film via UltraViolet, redeemable before April 30, 2017
